Home / How It Works

The municipal tap water is treated to keep certain contaminants within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations, but is it safe to drink?  Water utilities across the country are adding chlorine and/or chloramine (combination of chlorine and ammonia) to kill the bacteria and prevent waterborne disease.  Since chloramine is the least expensive and easiest option available to water utilities it became the most common used method for the treatment of our tap water around the country.  Unfortunately the chloramine is less effective and more dangerous to our health than chlorine.

The trihalomethanes are chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform. Trihalomethanes are formed as a by-product predominantly when chlorine is used to disinfect water for drinking. They represent one group of chemicals generally referred to as disinfection by-products. They result from the reaction of chlorine or bromine with organic matter present in the water being treated. The THMs produced have been associated through epidemiological studies with some adverse health effects.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a class or group of organic chemicals that contain carbon and tell to volatilize or evaporate into the atmosphere, such as: benzene, toluene, etc. The EPA estimates that VOCs are present in one-fifth or 20 % of the nation's water supplies. VOCs can have a variety of harmful health effects.
